It happens on almost every boat dive. You complete your ascent, do your safety stop, and surface — only to find the boat is further away than expected, the current has drifted you, or the surface is busy with other watercraft. This is the moment a surface marker buoy earns its place in your kit bag. An SMB is not dramatic safety equipment. It is one of the most practical and consistently useful items a scuba diver can carry. Yet many recreational divers, especially those who have always dived with a guide, have never actually deployed one themselves.
What An SMB Is
An SMB — surface marker buoy, also called a safety sausage, DSMB, or delayed surface marker buoy — is an inflatable tube that you send to the surface from depth while still underwater. It creates a visible signal above the water line, alerting the boat crew and other vessels that there is a diver below ascending to the surface. The tube is brightly coloured — typically orange or red — and tall enough to be visible from distance, often between 100cm and 180cm when inflated. The diver holds a reel or spool with a line connecting them to the buoy, which remains on the surface as the diver ascends beneath it.
Why Every Diver Should Carry One
Three situations make an SMB essential:
- The first is a missed boat pickup. Currents, drift diving, and surface conditions can put you at the surface in a different location than planned. Without a visible marker, the boat crew may not know exactly where you are.
The second is busy surface conditions. Boat traffic, jet ski activity, and other watercraft are common around popular dive sites. An SMB signals clearly to surface users that a diver is below and ascending.
The third is unexpected ascents away from the entry point. Longer dives, stronger-than-expected currents, and navigation errors can all put a diver at the surface somewhere unexpected. An SMB turns that situation from a potentially stressful problem into a managed one.

Closed-Circuit vs Open-Circuit SMBs
Two main types are worth knowing.
Open-circuit SMBs have an open bottom. You inflate them by blowing air into them orally, using your alternate air source, or venting air from your BCD low-pressure inflator hose. They are simple and widely used for recreational diving.
Closed-circuit SMBs (DSMBs) have a sealed end and a one-way valve. They are a little more complex to deploy but retain air more reliably in choppy surface conditions. They are preferred by divers who do more drift diving or dive in locations with stronger tidal movement.
For most recreational divers in Singapore and Southeast Asia, a good open-circuit SMB paired with a basic spool or reel is more than sufficient.
How To Deploy An SMB Underwater
This is the part most divers are not shown during their open water course, which is why practising it in a pool or shallow water before a boat dive is strongly recommended.
The standard method using a spool:
First, maintain your depth at your safety stop — typically five metres. Secure your position with neutral buoyancy before attempting deployment.
Hold the spool in one hand and the SMB in the other. Attach the spool line to the SMB clip if not already connected.
Open the SMB bottom and direct a short burst of air into it from your alternate air source or BCD inflator. The SMB should begin to inflate and rise toward the surface. Let the spool run freely as the SMB ascends, controlling the line carefully to avoid tangles.
Once the SMB is on the surface, lock the spool and hold it securely. Complete your safety stop while holding the spool, then ascend slowly along the line.
Do not rush the deployment. A botched deployment that causes a fast ascent is far more dangerous than surfacing without an SMB and signalling the boat by hand.
Choosing An SMB
A few practical things to look for when buying your first SMB:
Visibility. Choose a bright orange or red tube — ideally with a reflective strip for visibility in low light or choppy conditions.
Size. A 100cm tube is compact and easy to pack. A 150cm or 180cm tube is more visible from a moving boat. For diving around busy or exposed sites, taller is better.
Oral inflation vs hose inflation. Some SMBs are designed specifically for oral inflation, others for BCD hose inflation, and some work with both. Confirm which method yours supports before your first dive with it.
Durability. Avoid very cheap SMBs with thin fabric. The tube needs to hold its shape against surface chop and remain buoyant long enough for the boat to reach you.

What To Carry With Your SMB
An SMB without a spool or reel is only half the kit. The line between you and the buoy is what keeps you connected to your surface signal.
A finger spool holding 15 to 20 metres of line covers the depth of most recreational safety stops with room to spare. For deeper dives or more advanced drift diving, a full reel with more line capacity is worth considering.
Keep your SMB and spool stored somewhere accessible on your BCD — a BCD pocket or a clip that can be reached with one hand. Fumbling through your kit while maintaining depth and buoyancy is not the ideal situation to be unpacking your safety equipment.
